“There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD” (Proverbs 21:30). The wisdom and counsel of the world often contradict the Word of God, but He’s the only dependable, unchanging truth we have. Wise individuals seek understanding from Him, and no other source.

“Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles” (Proverbs 21:23). Words are powerful, and we can create problems for ourselves simply by what we say. To stay out of trouble, it’s wise to think first before we open our mouths.

  • March 13

“The tongue of the wise utters knowledge rightly, but the mouth of the [self-confident] fool pours out folly” (Proverbs 15:2, AMPC). Our words can betray us if we speak carelessly. What’s in our hearts and minds comes out in what we say; therefore, our speech often reveals whether we place our confidence in ourselves, or in God.

“When pride comes, then comes shame; but with the humble is wisdom” (Proverbs 11:2, NKJV). Pride interferes with our relationship with God and leaves us open to shame. Agreeing with what He says in His Word and the promises He makes to us is true humility in action, and it displays godly wisdom.

  • March 11

“O my God, I trust in thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me. Yea, let none that wait on thee be ashamed: let them be ashamed which transgress without cause... O keep my soul, and deliver me: let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in thee” (Psalm 25:2, 3, 20). The devil tries to use shame against us to hold us back from fulfilling God’s mission. Although those who disobey the Word can fall prey to shame’s destructive forces, our trust in God defeats this spiritual weapon.

“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death” (Romans 8:2). Earthly laws are made to protect us, but another set of laws operate on the spiritual level. These laws affect our salvation, and it’s important for us to understand them. Jesus shed His blood to establish the Gospel of Grace and give us eternal life.

“I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; and, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down. Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction. Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: so shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth; and thy want as an armed man” (Proverbs 24:30-34). The values we embrace eventually manifest themselves for all to see. If we’re lazy, we reap what we sow. Hard work and honest labor indicate a godly attitude in this area.

“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money” (Luke 16:13, NIV). If we put money before everything else in our lives, we can become enslaved to it and end up miserable. God knows that financial wealth can tempt us to trust it instead of Him, so He warns us against having a wrong relationship with it.

“And be renewed in the spirit of your mind” (Ephesians 4:23). There’s a connection between what we think and what we do. When we want to see tangible evidence of true change in our lives, we must renew our thought processes to agree with what the Scriptures tell us.

“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things” (Philippians 4:8, NKJV). We fight a spiritual battle in our minds every day. To win, our strategy must be to deliberately avoid thinking like the rest of the world, which is under the influence of the enemy. Aligning our thoughts with God’s thoughts makes us of one mind with Him.

“He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit. Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding” (Proverbs 17:27, 28)

Some people seem to know when to keep quiet when others are opening their mouths and putting their foot in it. Spiritual discernment from the Holy Spirit gives us the wisdom to know when to practice the vocabulary of silence and say nothing.

“Better is a dry morsel with quietness than a house full of feasting [on offered sacrifices] with strife” (Proverbs 17:1, AMPC).

Strife is a spirit that opposes the peace and harmony of the Holy Spirit. None of our self-efforts at projecting an outward appearance matter if our motives are wrong; what does matter to God is what’s in our heart.

“The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows)” (John 10:10, AMPC).

Jesus certainly offers eternal life to those who believe in His name and accept Him by faith, but we don’t have to wait until we get to heaven to take hold of this promise. Trusting Him enough to let Him guide us in every aspect of our lives fills us with immense peace and joy.

“A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones” (Proverbs 17:22).

There’s an unbreakable connection between what goes on in our hearts and what happens in our physical bodies. God’s presence does more for our good health than all the medicines and prescriptions in the world.

“The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him” (Psalm 28:7).

Our external environment is a dangerous place, and we’re not strong enough to handle every situation that comes our way. We can trust God to shield us from harm, keep us safe, and deliver us from evil. Knowing this gives us great joy.

“And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee” (Psalm 9:10).

Developing a close personal relationship with God involves trusting Him in all things and in every situation; this is a trust He’ll never betray. When we seek God, we’ll find Him, and He promises never to leave us.

“For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil” (2 Corinthians 4:8, 9).

When we get born again, we’re spiritual infants who must learn the basics of the gospel teachings. As we continue to study God’s Word and partake of the spiritual nourishment it gives us, we grow spiritually and become stronger. Maturing in Christ and receiving the gift of discernment from Him enables us to handle the more advanced lessons He teaches us.

“Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor. Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law” (Romans 13:7, 8, NKJV).

God sees money differently from the world’s view. Love is the currency of heaven; it’s also the new law He gave us when He replaced the Law of Moses with the grace of Jesus Christ.

“But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. And you will go out and frolic like well-fed calves” (Malachi 4:2, NIV).

Those who choose to put God first in their lives receive His promise of healing and right standing with Him. In a sick and sinful world, the manifestation of this promise in our lives will be plain to see when we stand out from the crowd.
